UNESCO WHS HUNT: Historic Centre of Macao
A fascinating blend of the Western and the Chinese civilizations, the Historic Centre of Macao (Centro Histórico de Macau, 澳門歷史城區) is one of my favorite UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Macau is not big, but the number of things to see simply amazes. When it comes to what was included in the World Heritage Site, there are 30 locations grouped in two zones. Zone 1 encompasses the main part of the colonial city, stretching from Camões Garden in the north down to the southern tip of the peninsula. Among the included 21 buildings and 8 squares are such major landmarks as Ruins of St. Paul’s, Senado Square and A-Ma Temple. Zone 2 focuses on the Guia Fortress, famed for its chapel and lighthouse. The buffer zone covers the whole Guia Hill.
